Recently purchased ASUS Netbook 1015 PEB. The netbook is a new experience for me and am trying to learn how to get the best performance out of it. Trend Micro came with it, a 2 month trial version (will be replacing it with Norton Internet Security which I have on my desktop PC), am not particularly satisfied with Trend. It did give some recommendations on improving security & performance by eliminating programs which exchange info with the internet that you really do not need or that may be allowing spyware & perhaps other malicious things to hitch a ride to your computer inadvertently or some deliberately & several internet sites think Fetcher may be one of the deliberate ones for introducing these things.
Anyway it came up in Trend as one to consider removing and I could not find it on my computer. I did find a site that states it is an unknown entity & recommends scanning for viruses, spyware, etc., company issued by is not specified but they have the path for it: %ProgramFiles%\ASUS\ASUSVIBE\1.0.178\Fetcher.exe. Product version: 1.0.0.0 File Size: 21.5KB Date Created: 01/07/2010 11:15 PM. They also state there is currently no description for this entity.
So the interesting thing here is that ASUS VIBE is a program include with my netbook, called Fun Center/Entertainment. It offers trial versions of games to play, music, & some other stuff I really haven’t scoped it out other than a quick look & opening a couple of games which you can then purchase if you want the complete version & I think the trial versions run out after a certain length of time. Haven’t noticed anything specifically not working properly or as well as it should perform.
It does seem rather slow sometimes more so than others, and there have been a few quirky things that have occurred, don’t know if these things are related to Fetcher.exe or are just the nature of the netbook which is slower than a desktop for sure, but the slower performance at that kind of comes and goes for no apparent reason with no change in other areas to account for it does seem suspicious. Now however, if it is maybe a necessary part of the ASUS VIBE program I don’t know if I can safely remove it from the list of programs that exchange info with the internet, it seems weird that Fetcher.exe is listed but nothing related to ASUS VIBE is in the list of programs that could possibly allow spyware, etc. in-also in this list Fetcher.exe is represent as a program it self, but is not listed that way any where else on the netbook.
I’m going to see if I can trace this path myself & probably call tech support at some point. Possibly just set a restore point & remove it from the programs that can exchange info with internet ( the others are all valid in there interactions and verified by Microsoft & Trend and there aren’t very many of them either). Thought other folks with a ASUS might be interested in this or maybe have already found out if it is a necessary component of ASUS VIBE or just an evil spyware importer.
I’ll post again if/when I learn more. Am wondering if Fletcher is showing up on other ASUS products or other brands of netbooks, laptops, or whatever. I’ll check in to see if anybody has posted further info on this. Good surfing, plomker
