Hi Derek,
You likely have a redirect virus, such as Tojan.Vundo, Virtumonde, Vundo, Virtumondo or MS Juan. I’m guessing that when you click on one of the results from a search, you are taken to an unrelated site filled with ads, correct?
What you have is a small script on your system that listens for requests from firefox and sends you off to ad sites. They are called a virus by many, but unlike most viruses, there is a good chance that it’s not grabbing any personal information, just redirecting you.
Take a look at your hosts file (windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts – or search for hosts) and make sure there is only one statement in there, like this:
127.0.0.1 localhost
Note: those # pound signs are comments and okay.
If you see anything else, put a pound sign in front of it and a space (they may be legitimate and needed, so commenting it out with the # is the best option).
Now go back to firefox and try visiting google again. Same problem? Try selecting ‘Show Hidden Devices’ under Hardware Device Manager in your Windows Control Panel. Then look for a file called “TDSSserv.sys”. If you find it, right click on the file and disable. Don’t uninstall or the virus may notice the file missing and reinstall it. Now restart your computer and head off to microsoft.com/security_essentials/ and install and run the free antispyware program.
There are so many variants of the firefox redirect virus that it’s hard to cover it all. Let us know what happens!
Good luck,
Jim
